Declan Rice: England or Ireland
Which would you rather?

Personally I hope he does a Jack Grealish. Declares for England, never gets called up. Stays injury free, no stupid tackle from fucking Shaun Wright Phillips. Think Lanzini aswell, wish he’d never gone to the WC.

I don't agree with the rule that you can play for a country if your grandparents were born there, but that also is what it is.

Both rules are equally as ridiculous.

Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
I don't agree with the rules that you can switch countries, but the rules are there and he's entitled to opt to play for England if he chooses.

Zaha decided to play for Ivory Coast didn't he? It works both ways.

Let's be honest, no other country gives a fuck who a player has turned out for before, so why should we?

Ireland, since he's already played for them
All our players always get injured playing for England anyway, but apart from that he might catch something off all those dirty spurs players in the England squad

Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
My mother and all her family were born and bred in Co Kildare. I was born and raised in England and do not feel Irish in the slightest.

How Rice can be viewed as Irish when he only has one set of paternal grandparents who are Irish is beyond me.

People might as well get one of those Ancestry DNA kits and find a nationality to claim.

Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
I’m much more Irish than Rice and I’d be embarrassed to play for a country when my accent tells anyone within earshot exactly where I’m from to within a few postcodes.

He’s English and his dad’s a bit of a twat for bringing him up thinking any differently.

Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
I agree that Southgate should pick him. Deserves it on merit anyway - he's already streets ahead of Dier! Then we all fnd out.

Still, won't be the first time we fuck up on an IRISH BACKSTOP.

Geoff, I've got mostly Irish blood. But how many generations does it roll on for? His mum and dad were born in England, he was born in England. He's English. It's not that difficult ffs

Eerie Descent 12:59 Fri Jan 18
Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
You would think that he's waiting to get picked by England before announcing, and has probably had a conversation with Shergar to that effect.

Could be wrong, but there doesn't seem to be any other logical reason for this stance.

Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
Declan's dad, Séan, was born in England. But HIS parents were from, I think, Donegal. Declan's mum is English.

I am aware that many on here do not understand persons of Irish blood's somewhat "complicated" view of En-ger-land though. Hundreds of years of conflict does this.

Dare I even say this: but Morrissey's "Irish Blood English Heart" is actually quite pithy in this regard.

I don't have any issue whichever way he chooses. I'll just be sorry when he leaves West Ham United.

Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
In a nutshell Lily.

I don’t care who he chooses. I just think he should get on with it and make the decision. After about six months of deliberating, what else is there to think about?

Eerie Descent 12:53 Fri Jan 18
Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
I don't have a problem if he chooses Ireland, btw, I just think he should choose England and be left alone if he does.

Lily Hammer 12:47 Fri Jan 18
Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
I will have no problem with Rice whichever nation he chooses.

Some of you won’t like this, but English and Irish overlap, if we’re talking heritage and blood. I’m English, support England, most of my blood is Irish. I love England. I love Ireland.

Anyone who has a problem with Declan’s choice, should look in the mirror, take a deep breath, and get on with making your day sweet.

"I know teenagers who have ended up with massive sentences due to poor decisions they made"

And if the law decided they could get off of those sentences if they wanted to, they would still have chosen to do the sentence because they deserved it?

Hermit Road 12:30 Fri Jan 18
Re: Declan Rice: England or Ireland
He’s not Irish so shouldn’t play for them, but he’s already played for them so that should rule out playing for anyone else. He made a shit decision and should live with it. I get it that he was a teenager when he made the decision but it’s not the greatest hardship to bear. I know teenagers who have ended up with massive sentences due to poor decisions they made, nobody is suggesting letting them off because of their age.
